about Me

William A. Squire (Tony) – Founder

I was the first to bring Boys AAU Basketball to the Richmond area in1987/1988 by organizing the Squires Boys Basketball Education Foundation, Inc. The Program is now in its 3rd decade of service to the community. As each successful year concludes I am filled with a renewed commitment to the spiritual and moral growth of the boys.

As an avid student and  fan of the game, my vision was to create an environment through the discipline of basketball for young men to develop the character to become good citizens in their schools and community as well as become role model to their families.

The guiding principles I established for the Squires Boys Basketball Foundation, Inc. included these goals: promote positive character, respect, self-discipline, commitment to the community, encourage academic excellence, sportsmanship, and create opportunities for basketball scholarships.

What began during the 1987-1988 season in the Richmond community has now spread throughout Virginia and surrounding states. CREDIBILITY, LONGEVITY AND PRODUCTIVITY DEFINES US!! Over the past 3 decades, the Squires Boys Basketball Foundation, Inc. has directly helped more than 800 young men receive college scholarships.

In bringing Boys AAU Basketball to Richmond our program is also responsible for indirectly helping thousands of others receive college scholarships. This has provided young men a means of earning a college education and becoming productive contributing members of their community.

I am thankful to the many volunteers that have stepped up over the last 30 plus years to fortify and continue my original vision. The many volunteer coaches and supporting people have allowed us to strengthen and grow the program.

I am equally proud of each of our alumni, fifteen of who have gone on to play for the NBA and 8 have played for the NFL. Most other alumni achieved degrees that have allowed them to pursue successful careers across a wide spectrum of industries and businesses. Each year I begin anew, I am reinvigorated by the hopes, dreams, and potential that I see in the players who show up for Squires Boys Basketball Foundation, Inc. tryouts.

Volunteers, sponsors, and supporters are an important asset that allows my vision to continue. I look forward and hope I am blessed enough to continue my commitment to Squires Boys Basketball Foundation, Inc for decades to come.

Overview

The Squires Boys Basketball Foundation, Inc was organized in response to the challenge of increasing opportunities for young men by developing teamwork, self-confidence, and self-esteem, through structured athletic activities along with an exposure platform to increase scholarship opportunities. The Foundation encourages our youth to stay in school by stressing the link between class work, homework, studying, and career and educational achievement.

We strive to enhance the schools and community’s efforts to meet the social and educational needs of our young people. Participants range from elementary to post graduate from surrounding States.

Our primary support comes from family, friends, sponsors, and the community. The parents/guardians have witnessed firsthand the benefits of the program and are among our strongest supporters. It is not unusual for them to travel long distances, taking participants to practice sessions and to games.

Since 1987, more than 800 young men have received scholarships to attend prep schools, colleges, and universities.

Some have gained worldwide recognition, with 15 making it to NBA including Hall of Famers Ray Allen and Kevin Garnet, along with 8 others who have made it to the NFL. In addition, 200 athletes have participated in the International Pro Leagues.

The OBJECTIVES of the Squires Boys Basketball Foundation, Inc.:

  • To develop self-esteem, self-confidence, and respect for self and others.
