About Us

Welcome to Squires' Richmond Boys Basketball website. Richmond's first AAU Boys Basketball Program founded in 1987 by Tony Squire. Tony has dedicated over 30 years of his young life to developing a fine Program for hundreds of players across the state of Virginia as well as surrounding states.

OVERVIEW

The Squire’s program was organized in response to the challenge to increase opportunities for young men to develop teamwork, self-confidence and self-esteem through structured athletic activities along with an exposure platform to increase scholarship opportunities for young men to develop teamwork, self-confidence and self-esteem, through structured athletic activities. The Squires Boys Basketball Education Foundation, Inc. encourages our youth to stay in school by stressing the link between class work and home work, studying, and career and educational achievement.

We strive to enhance the schools and community’s efforts to meet the social and educational needs of our young people. Participants range from elementary to post grad. Most are from Richmond, some from other parts of Virginia, and a few from surrounding states.

OVERVIEW

Our primary support comes from family, friends and the community. The parents/guardians have witnessed first hand the benefits of the program, and are among our strongest supporters. It is not unusual for them to travel long distances, taking participants to practice sessions and to games.

Since 1987, more than 800 young men have received scholarships from colleges and universities; 150 have received scholarships to attend prep schools. Some have gained worldwide recognition, with 15 making it to the NBA including NBA Hall of Famers Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, along with 8 have made it to the NFL. In addition, 200 athletes have participated in the International Pro Leagues.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

We believe that a strong academic foundation, good character, respect, hard work, self-determination, and loyalty are the building blocks for success.

We mentor, teach and encourage participants to believe and invest in themselves, to take full advantage of educational opportunities, and be accountable for their actions. On and off the court, we provide leadership training and enrichment experiences through team play, camps, clinics, and workshops.

Through our community outreach we started a “Back on Track Ministry” with prisons and youth detention centers, along with guest speakers from Colleges, City leaders, and program alumni.

COMPETITION AND EXPERIENCES

One of the program’s greatest strengths is the opportunity for our youth to participate in challenging and competitive events throughout the country. We have participated in tournaments in over 30 states over the past 3 decades. This allows interaction with players, coaches and the audiences from different cultural and socio-economic background and various athletic abilities. They learn firsthand the importance of competitive team play, being supportive of each other, and how to be gracious and professional whether winning or losing.
